Talk Description
Institution: Head and Neck Cancer Australia - NSW, Australia
Aim: To evaluate early utilisation, unmet supportive care needs, and user reported experiences of Australia’s first specialist Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) Helpline, and its role in improving national access to navigation and peer support services.
Methodology: A mixed methods pre and post service evaluation followed implementation of Australia’s first HNC Helpline by Head and Neck Cancer Australia (HANCA) in March 2025. Funded under the Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program, the Helpline supports patients, carers, families, and healthcare professionals from pre diagnosis to long term survivorship. De identified data collected over 12 months, including caller type, cancer type, reason for contact, and support provided. Post contact surveys assessed satisfaction, navigation support, and psychosocial outcomes mapped to supportive care domains.
Results: In the first year, 709 patient and carer contacts were recorded across diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and management of long term and late effects. Common reasons for contact were care navigation, symptom management, psychosocial support, and practical assistance. Navigation was the predominant need, highlighting fragmented HNC care pathways. Utilisation increased following launch alongside awareness raising and referral pathway establishment, then stabilised. Some callers required facilitated connection to peer support groups, indicating gaps in HNC specific support services nationally. Pre-launch, 92% of healthcare professionals surveyed (n=125) reported intent to refer. Post launch survey data collection is ongoing, with respondents to date indicating they would use and/or recommend the Helpline.
Conclusion: Early findings indicate the HNC Helpline addresses a national gap in supportive cancer care by integrating navigation, psychosocial support, and peer support access, contributing to a coordinated national infrastructure for HNC survivorship and informing future integration with multidisciplinary cancer navigation services.
