Background: Secondary sarcopenia (loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with an impact on physical performance) from head and neck cancer and its associated treatment is prevalent. Sarcopenia impacts not only quality of life but has been found to be consistently associated with poorer survival and greater toxicity in head and neck cancer populations. Sarcopenia assessment is recommended for all people identified as “at risk” of sarcopenia following screening and is ideally performed at the time of cancer diagnosis.
The gold standard for assessment of sarcopenia is calculation of the skeletal muscle index (SMI) at L3 vertebra and more recently through C3 vertebra. However, the feasibility of this assessment tool may be limited in cancer centres. Most cancer treatment centres have the SOZO® BIS to measure fluid status and body composition in under 30 seconds. This may offer a practical alternative to sarcopenia assessment and monitoring in the head and neck cancer population.
Aims and Methods: The primary aim was to assess the feasibility of incorporating a BIS measurement via the SOZO® into as part of a Physiotherapist assessment within a head and neck cancer MDT. The secondary aim was to assess sarcopenia using this method in a group of head and neck cancer patients prior to commencement of cancer treatment.
Results/Conclusion: The use of the SOZO® BIS device was feasible to incorporate into a Physiotherapist’s routine clinical assessment. Results of skeletal muscle mass of 18 HANC patients prior to cancer treatment will be presented.
