Talk Description
Institution: GenesisCare - Queensland/Bundaberg, Australia
Aims
To evaluate the feasibility and impact of a nurse-led primary care model designed to enhance coordination, symptom management, and patient engagement for H&N cancer patients receiving radiation therapy.
Methodology
A pilot project was implemented at GenesisCare Bundaberg. A designated radiation oncology nurse acted as the primary care nurse, conducting regular patient reviews and coordinating care with radiation oncologists, allied health professionals, hospitals, and multidisciplinary team members. A structured patient-tracking tool monitored treatment site, weight trends, oral intake, and treatment-related toxicities. Allied health services were proactively engaged to support timely intervention. Newly diagnosed patients received a tailored H&N cancer information starter pack. Evaluation included a patient satisfaction survey and a focus group involving patients currently receiving or who had completed radiation therapy.
Results
The pilot improved systematic monitoring of patient needs and strengthened multidisciplinary coordination. Patient feedback demonstrated high satisfaction, highlighting the value of consistent nursing support and timely symptom management. Nursing staff reported increased knowledge, confidence, and engagement in H&N cancer care, as well as improved collaboration with allied health services and families.
Conclusion
This nurse-led model demonstrated feasibility and positive impact in improving coordinated care for H&N cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. Findings support further evaluation and potential scalability across radiation oncology services.
